A perfectly salty sweet paleo trail mix snack, full of healthy nuts & dried fruit. A great healthy alternative for an on-the-go snack!
Trail mix. It might just be the perfect snack.
But if you try to eat paleo, it can be tough. There's lots of trail mix available, but most of them include dairy, sugar, additives, preservatives, and plain old junk. Finding a clean, paleo trail mix can be tough, so it's best to just make your own.
Did you know that it's thought that the combination of nuts, raisins and chocolate as a trail snack dates at least to the 1910s, when outdoorsman Horace Kephart recommended it in his popular camping guide.
You can find even more fun facts about trail mix here!
My favorite tidbit I found when researching trail mix is that in New Zealand, trail mix is known as "scroggin" or "schmogle". What fun words. I want to say schmogle every day.
I chose to start my paleo trail mix with raw nuts and toast them myself, as it allows me to control the level of roasting, salt, and more. If you're in a hurry, you could easily purchase pre-roasted nuts and throw it all together for a simple snack!
I use Enjoy Life chips, as they are dairy free and are as close to paleo as you can get when it comes to chocolate chips! I purchase mine through Thrive Market, which is like a discount Amazon for all the best clean eating food brands. You pay a small annual fee just like with Prime, and you get great discounts on all the brands you need for your paleo self.
If you haven't checked out Thrive Market yet, you can check out their Enjoy Life chips now - these are the ones that I use!
This paleo trail mix is just the right balance. It's salty and sweet, crunchy and chewy. It's quick and easy to make.
It's perfect for a quick anytime snack, and will tide you over when you find yourself in a food desert without options. Just don't leave it in your car, because...chocolate.
